Boyne Outfitters is situated at the heart of the Midwest’s ‘Golden Triangle’ of fly fishing. Not only does northern Michigan offer us amazing access to miles of pristine blue-ribbon trout streams, but this is also the land of legends. Hemingway spent his summers just up the road. Trout Unlimited was formed a few miles over on the Au Sable. Leonard Halladay created the Adams fly down on the Boardman. We are at the heart of it all. Stop on by and let our staff here at Boyne Outfitters set you up for your next big adventure on the water!
The staff and guides at Boyne Outfitters are a collection of explorers, outdoors enthusiasts and, above all, experienced fly anglers. Many have lived in the area for much of their lives and others have made the move to Boyne country in search of fly fishing heaven.
Boyne Outfitters covers a lot of different watersheds in the Tip of the Mitt! We cover waters such as the Boyne River, Jordan River, Sturgeon River, Pigeon River, Black River, Maple River, Manistee River, and Lake Michigan. Due to the plethora of opportunities, we fish the best water for that time of year.

Capt. Ethan Winchester
Born and raised in northern Michigan, Ethan has been fishing the area as long as he can remember. Ethan gained his passion for fly fishing after casting his first flies on the legendary Au Sable River. During college, Ethan fished the western Michigan tributaries extensively for trout, salmon and steelhead, spending as much time in waders as in the lecture hall. His love for cold water resources and protecting the fisheries he loves led Ethan to founding and serving as President of the first collegiate sub-chapter of Trout Unlimited in the nation, Ferris Trout Unlimited.
After graduating from Ferris State University, his passion for the sport took him to Sweetwater Travel Company’s Fly Fishing Guide School outside of Livingston, Montana where he gained even more knowledge and skills required of today’s professional guides. During the past several seasons, Ethan has honed his skills with a fly rod and at the tying bench, even landing him the coveted position of an Alaskan guide at Kulik Lodge of the Bristol Bay region in the summer of 2010 chasing big Alaskan ‘bows.
However, his love for northern Michigan and its intimate fisheries brought him back to Boyne Country to introduce more people to the fishing he has enjoyed for much of his life. Ethan currently holds a Captain’s License with the United States Coast Guard. He is also a SAGE Elite Pro, serves as an Ambassador for Huron Pines, as an adviser to Friends of the Jordan River, and is a member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. Ethan enjoys teaching beginners and pushes advanced anglers to hone their skills on the river. If you are new to the sport, or have a passion as strong as his, Ethan will make sure you have an enjoyable experience on the water.
Andrew grew up in the metro Detroit area, but he spent his summers longing for the next camping and fishing trip to northern Michigan. This is where his passion for fishing first began. Like many early on, Andrew focused on lake fishing for bass, pike and other warm water species. However, a decade ago Andrew was introduced to his first fly rod on the banks of the Au Sable River. Since that time, Andrew has put nearly all his effort into chasing trout, steelhead, and salmon on the fly. While attending Michigan State University, Andrew was a member of the MSU Fishing Club, which fueled his passion for fly fishing even more. After graduating from MSU Andrew decided to pursue his passion of fly fishing and the outdoors and turn his “hobby” into a lifestyle and career. By making the move to Boyne Country and joining Boyne Outfitters, Andrew intends to develop his skills…focusing on the intimate fisheries of northern Michigan…and grow as an angler. But most importantly…share his passion with our guests!
You’ll likely see Andrew on a regular basis in the shop, as he supervises our retail sales and keeps the brick and mortar up and running.
Jake grew up fishing the classic trout waters of Montana. When he was 12, in an attempt to get Jake to sit still, his parents purchased him his first fly tying kit…that was all it took! Since then, Jake has been fascinated with all aspects of fly fishing including water ecology, entomology, fly tying, and of course…catching fish! While attending college, Jake obtained his first guide position on the Wind River in Wyoming. It was there that Jake discovered the satisfaction he gained from helping clients have a successful day on the water, as well as providing them with an enjoyable and memorable experience. In addition the Wind River, Jake has guided clients across Montana as well as spending several summers in the land of the midnight sun…Alaska. Jake has been a teacher and coach for the last seven years in western Montana and has continued to guide each summer. In order to raise their two boys in northern Michigan, Jake and his wife have relocated to the area.
Greg comes to Boyne Outfitters after taking a ten-year sabbatical from the fly fishing industry in order to focus on some of the finer things in life – family. Living in Petoskey with his wife and two girls, Greg knows the local waters. Greg’s experience stems from guiding stints for Streamside Orvis located in Traverse City, and the former Whippoorwill Orvis in Petoskey where he learned the northern Michigan waters and fine-tuned his skills with a fly rod. He even has a handmade McKenzie-style drifter that he floats on our waters. Greg loves the lyrical side of angling, where he has had works featured in Fly Rod & Reel, Gray’s Sporting Journal, and Sporting Classics to name a few. During the off-season, Greg teaches fourth-grade elementary where his patience and teaching abilities from such truly shine in his guiding.
Tim’s fascination with fly fishing began right here in northern Michigan – growing up no more than a few miles away from the beautiful Jordan River. Throughout his childhood, Tim chased trout, salmon and steelhead at every chance in which he considers ‘the most pristine waters the Midwest has to offer’. As he matured, so did his passion and love for the sport. After graduating from high school, Tim attended Sweetwater Travel Company’s Fly Fishing Guide School in Livingston, Montana where he obtained the skills and knowledge required to turn his passion into a career – his lifelong dream. Tim greatly enjoys introducing newcomers to the outdoors and fly fishing alike. During his spare time, Tim enjoys learning new waters and advancing the proficiency of his craft. Tim is excited to begin his guide career with Boyne Outfitters.
Growing up in central Michigan, Jake was never a far shot from our area waters. After relocating to the Gaylord area in ’05, Jake has been honing his skills on the small creeks and streams we call home. He spends a large majority of his time in the Pigeon River Country, chasing the blue halos of Brook Trout in the Pigeon and Black Rivers, and rockin’ the steelhead and browns of the Sturgeon. Spending so much time in the woods and on the water, Jake enjoys sharing his outdoor experiences with others which led him to pursue guiding in northern Michigan. Jake is excited to be a part of the Boyne Outfitters team, and is looking forward to providing top-notch service and a great northern Michigan experience.
