CT Fish Guides has three guides who specialize in the Connecticut Waters.
Derrick guides fresh, salt, fly, and spin for both beginner and advanced anglers. His specialty is the Farmington River and considering the many hours he’s spent on the water, Derrick can help up your game quickly. Targeting big, high quality fish is Derrick’s favorite pastime, let him share some of his knowledge and experiences with you.
Tom’s first love is small stream fishing. He spends a lot of time in the woods ‘humpin’ up streams looking for new untouched spots. These days you will most likely find him backpacking the Appalachian trail in NY, CT and MA, fishing small streams as he goes. Tommy spends a good bit of time out at night and has developed his own low light patterns. He is also a fine photographer. Pictures are proof!
Kurt has been fishing since the age of four. Ever since his first time out and every time there after Kurt’s thoughts have been preoccupied with the memories of his trips and the plans for the next one. His favorite species to fish for are Steelhead, Brown Trout and Striped Bass. A true hard core fishing addict.

Derrick Kirkpatrick is a phenomenal guide! Great day on the water
We fished the Farmington river which is notoriously tricky. Derrick not only knows the river like the back of his hand, he is an incredibly technical fisherman. Coming away from the experience I gained valuable insight into targeting big, wild brown trout – that I have been able to apply...see complete review
Born in Milford Connecticut, Derrick picked up fishing at the age of 6. He started out hitting local ponds in the area and then moved on to a more skillful level of angling. At age 11 Derrick purchased a cheap fly rod and taught himself to cast. He expanded his species list targeting trout, striped bass, and carp; both spin and fly. At the age of 18 Derrick engaged in a tradition of going up to the Farmington every opening day with a bunch of friends. One of these friends is Derrick Lambert, a multi-talented man whose experience and knowledge include; artifacting, ice climbing, hunting, trapping, wood crafting and of course fishing among many other areas of expertise . He was the one to turn both Kierran and Derrick’s hobby into addiction by giving them guidance and showing them how to do things the right way; and most importantly, to appreciate both land and water.
At the age of 22 Derrick attended guide school in Avon, Colorado. Fly Fishing Outfitters, the #1 Orvis endorsed flyshop of 1998, trained and certified him as a guide. Since then Derrick has been a fly fishing manager for The Orvis Company and an assistant manager for Cabelas. With the combination of a Bachelors Degree in IT and free time, CT Fish Guides was born.
Tommy Baranowski was born and raised in Bristol, CT. At the age of six you could find Tommy bush wacking through the woods with rod in hand. In April 2003 he became an eagle scout. Tommy picked up a love for fishing from his father who has been trout fishing in CT and the great lakes region since the early 70s. Lake Ontario, the Salmon and Oswego rivers were their stompping grounds. After highschool Tom was introduced to flyfishing by a good friend and charter captain Aaron Cascone. Arron worked at Orvis and introduced Tom to Derrick Kirkpatrick, Andy Haberman and Johnny Slauenwhite. You could always find Tommy in the shop sharpining his skills, cracking jokes and hungry for fresh tactics. Tommy is an artistic fly tier do much to the fact of his teacher, Andy Haberman. His nymphing skills fine tuned by Derrick Kirkpatrick, Kierran Broatch and Aarron Swanson.
